The ATS CV template that actually parses
Most CV templates are designed to impress a person. The first reader of your application is software. This template is written the other way round: every rule below exists because a real applicant tracking system fails on the alternative. Copy it section by section, then check the result.
Paste my CV into CareeryWhat an ATS CV template is, and what it is not
An applicant tracking system takes your file, strips it to plain text, then tries to work out which block of that text is your work history, which is your education and which is your contact information. It does that by looking for standard headings, consistent date patterns and a single reading order down the page. An ATS CV template is simply a layout that never gives the parser an ambiguous choice.
That is the whole trick. The template is not a design, it is a set of constraints. The words resume and CV are used interchangeably across the Gulf, so an ATS resume template and an ATS CV template mean the same document here: one column, standard headings, plain text, real dates, no decoration. Everything visually interesting you might add is something the parser has to guess about, and every guess is a chance to be filtered out before a recruiter opens the file.
The template below is deliberately plain and deliberately complete. Work down it in order. Each section gives you the formatting rules, an example you can copy, and the specific reason parsers break when the rule is ignored.
The template, section by section
Use these six sections in this order. Type them into a blank Word or Google Docs file rather than pasting into an existing designed template, because the old template's tables and text boxes survive the paste and undo the work.
1. Contact block
- Full name on its own line, in the largest text on the page (14 to 16pt is enough).
- One line underneath: city and country, phone with country code, email, LinkedIn URL.
- Write the email and phone as plain text, never as an icon or an image.
- No date of birth, nationality photo, passport number or marital status, even if a local resume template asks for it.
Layla Al-Harbi Riyadh, Saudi Arabia | +966 5X XXX XXXX | layla@email.com | linkedin.com/in/laylaalharbi
Why ATS breaks on this: contact details placed in the document header or footer are ignored by Workday and Oracle Taleo. Your CV parses perfectly and then arrives with no email address, so nobody can contact you.
2. Professional summary
- Three to four lines of plain prose, no bullet points, directly under the contact block.
- Open with your job title as the employer writes it, then years of experience, then domain.
- Include two or three of the exact skills named in the job advert.
- Write in the third person without pronouns: 'Finance analyst with six years...' not 'I am a...'.
Finance analyst with six years of experience in FMCG across Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Specialises in financial modelling, IFRS reporting and Power BI dashboards. Led a forecasting rebuild that cut monthly close from nine days to four.
Why ATS breaks on this: creative labels such as 'About me' or 'My story' are not recognised section headings, so the parser dumps this text into an unlabelled block or into the previous section. Call it 'Professional Summary' or 'Summary'.
3. Skills
- A single heading called 'Skills' or 'Technical Skills', never a rated star chart or a bar graph.
- Comma-separated plain text, grouped into two or three labelled lines.
- Spell out the term and the abbreviation once each: 'Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)'.
- Only list skills you can defend in an interview, the shortlist stage is human.
Technical: SQL, Python (pandas, NumPy), Power BI, Advanced Excel, SAP Finance: IFRS reporting, budgeting and forecasting, variance analysis, working capital Languages: Arabic (native), English (fluent)
Why ATS breaks on this: skills drawn as progress bars or five-star ratings carry no text at all. The parser sees an empty section and your keyword match score collapses to near zero.
4. Work experience
- Reverse chronological order, most recent role first.
- One line per role: Job Title, Company, City, Country. Dates on the next line as 'Jan 2023 - Present'.
- Three to six bullets per role, each on its own line, each starting with a standard bullet character.
- Use the bullet formula: action verb + what you did + tool or method + measurable result.
- Repeat the job advert's exact phrasing where it is honest to do so.
Senior Finance Analyst, Almarai, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Jan 2023 - Present • Rebuilt the monthly forecasting model in Excel and Power BI, cutting close time from 9 days to 4 • Automated 14 recurring IFRS reports in SQL, saving roughly 20 analyst hours per month • Presented variance analysis to a leadership group of 12, informing a SAR 4M cost reduction plan
Why ATS breaks on this: date ranges written inside a right-hand column or a table cell are frequently attached to the wrong employer, which produces a work history with gaps you do not have. Keep dates on a plain line under the job title.
5. Education
- Degree, institution, city and country, then graduation year.
- Put education below experience unless you graduated in the last two years.
- Add grade or GPA only if it helps you, and use the local scale with its maximum: '4.6 / 5.0'.
- No secondary school once you hold a degree.
BSc Accounting and Finance, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 2019 | GPA 4.6 / 5.0
Why ATS breaks on this: abbreviating an institution to initials means a recruiter filtering on the full university name never sees your record. Write the name in full at least once.
6. Certifications and courses
- Certificate name, issuing body, year completed. One per line.
- Use the official certificate title, including the version or level.
- List only completed credentials, with 'in progress, expected Month Year' for live study.
- Keep the last three to five years, drop anything older unless it is a licence.
CFA Level I, CFA Institute, 2025 Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate, Coursera, 2024 Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300), Microsoft, 2024
Why ATS breaks on this: certifications squeezed into a sidebar are read after the footer text or not at all, so a credential the job specifically requires never registers as a keyword match.
Page settings that keep the parse clean
Set margins to 2cm on every side, body text to 10.5 or 11pt, line spacing to 1.15, and section headings to the same font one or two points larger in bold. Use a single standard bullet character throughout. Save the working file as .docx, and export a PDF only when the employer explicitly asks for one. Name the file with your own name and the role, for example layla-alharbi-finance-analyst.docx, because several systems index the filename.
Do not use section breaks, columns, or Word's built-in resume templates from the gallery, most of them are table-based underneath even when they look like plain text on screen.
What to avoid
Tables
Parsers read tables cell by cell in unpredictable order, so a two-column table turns your experience into scrambled fragments.
Multi-column layouts
The classic sidebar CV reads left column then right column, or interleaves them line by line. Either way, the meaning is lost.
Headers and footers
Workday and Oracle Taleo commonly ignore this region entirely. Anything you put there, including your phone number, disappears.
Text boxes and shapes
Text inside a drawing object is not part of the document text layer, so the parser extracts nothing from it.
Graphics, logos and charts
Skill wheels, company logos and rating bars contribute zero keywords and can break the parse of the surrounding text.
Unusual fonts
Decorative or non-embedded fonts can extract as symbol characters. Stick to Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Georgia or Times New Roman.
Photos
Not parsed, not needed, and stripped by most enterprise systems. Gulf employers running Workday do not see it anyway.
Design-tool PDFs
Canva, Illustrator and Photoshop exports often flatten text into an image. If you cannot select and copy the text, neither can the ATS.
Tailoring the template for each application
The template gets you parsed. Keyword alignment gets you ranked. Keep one master file built to these rules, then for each advert change three things only: the job title in your summary, the first six items in your skills line, and the phrasing of the two or three bullets that most closely match the requirements. Mirror the employer's exact wording, because the system matches strings rather than meaning, and 'stakeholder management' does not register as a match for 'worked with clients'.
Aim for the advert's core requirements to appear naturally somewhere in the document, most of them in the skills line and the experience bullets. Stuffing a hidden block of white keywords at the bottom of the page is detected by every modern system and is treated as a reason to reject, not a shortcut past the filter.

Check my CV against this templateFrequently asked questions
What is an ATS CV template?
An ATS CV template is a CV layout built so applicant tracking software can read every line of it: one column, standard section headings, plain text, no tables, no graphics and no text boxes. The visual design is deliberately plain because the first reader is a parser, not a person. A good ATS CV template still looks professional to the recruiter who opens it after the software has passed it through.
Is a Word or PDF ATS CV template better?
A .docx file parses correctly in every major system, so it is the safest default. A PDF exported from Word or Google Docs with selectable text also parses well in Workday, Greenhouse, Lever and iCIMS. Avoid PDFs exported from design tools such as Canva, Illustrator or Photoshop, because they often embed the text as an image and the parser reads nothing at all.
Does an ATS resume template need a photo?
No. Photos are not parsed, they push your text into odd positions, and in most Gulf employers running Workday or SAP SuccessFactors the photo is stripped before a recruiter sees the file. Leave it out, even though many local resume templates include one. Use the space for a stronger professional summary instead.
How do I format my work experience for an ATS?
Use one entry per role in the pattern: Job Title, Company, City and Country, then Month Year to Month Year on its own line. Follow with three to six bullets that each start with an action verb and end with a number. Do not merge two roles into one entry and do not put dates in a sidebar, because sidebar text is often read out of order.
How long should an ATS CV be?
Length is not an ATS filter. One page suits under three years of experience, two pages suits most mid-level and senior professionals in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Parsers handle multi-page documents without difficulty, so never shrink fonts or remove white space just to force one page, that damages readability for the human stage.
